Byron Bay is the mostly easterly point on
the Australian continent and the location of Goshinkan Dojo. Goshinkan Dojo was
opened in 1991 by Master Koretoshi Maruyama. Michael Williams Sensei,
Chief Instructor of Aikido Yuishinkai International, who had established
Goshinkan Dojo, has, in May 2006, moved to Fiji to establish Aikido Yuishinkai in the Pacific Islands. At Goshinkan a full schedule of classes
is now taught to all levels and ages of the local community and the numerous visitors
who arrive from throughout Australia and overseas by Jim Nicholls sensei, Head Dojo Instructor, with the help of a range of Senior Students/Instructors. Over the years,
Goshinkan Dojo has hosted many seminars with renowned Aikido Masters
and welcomes everyone to train regardless of style or affiliation.
Goshinkan Dojo has a large local training population with over
100 adults and many children. There are many senior students
ranked nidan and above as well as a large number of beginning and
intermediate levels. Goshinkan Dojo is a colourful, interesting
community of people, a reflection of the unique town of Byron Bay.
The dojo provides a friendly and supportive atmosphere of caring
instructors and students dedicated to the benefits of aikido training
and the Aikido Yuishinkai philosophy of 'Positive Mind'. (See some

Aikikids Program
Goshinkan Dojo has developed a highly successful
children's aikido program, known as 'Aikikids'. Children ages 7-11
commence their training in the beginner's class, where the focus
is on basic exercises, dojo etiquette and the development of self-confidence.
The Aikikids Program follows a grading syllabus designed for children's
capabilities and safety in mind. As they progress through the syllabus
and reach the level of green stripe, they advance to the senior Aikikids
class. There are over 60 children
training at Goshinkan Dojo and the benefits of aikido training for
children is widely-recognised throughout the community.
